2012 is Dickens Year! The great Victorian writer was born on 7th February 1812. Reason enough for us to dedicate our first Open Meeting this year to him. Come and join us for an evening where we discuss the life and time of this author, whose work transcends his own era, language and culture.

Our casual Open Meetings will give you the opportunity to talk with others in English about UK & international current affairs, books you are reading, films you have seen, or any other topics or issues you have in mind. You are also invited to bring along any books, articles or other material you would like to discuss. We are also open to any suggestions for a themed evening on a particular subject. Our annual British-style Christmas Party has quickly become a very popular tradition with members and non-members alike. Thus, we are very pleased to invite you to our 2011 DBG Dresden X-Mas Party at lovely “England, England”.

Join us for a cosy evening of games, singing and a selection of handmade English Christmas food!

Entry is free, but any contributions in food are very welcome as some of our members will prepare meals and snacks. Please do not bring any drinks. You may purchase original English hot, cold and alcoholic drinks from the shop.

Open Meeting – September: Last Night Of The Proms 2011

Every year on the second Saturday of September, classical music enthusiasts and admirers of British cultural heritage turn their eyes towards the Royal Albert Hall in London, where the world’s most famous classical music festival, the ‘Proms’ come to a fulminant ending.

The 2010 Last Night of the Proms were the subject of our last Open Meeting in July; now you have the chance to celebrate this year’s event together with like-minded folks at “England England”. (Unfortunately, due to technical restrictions, we were not able to show you the live stream of the broadcast on 10th September.)

For those of you who were not able to participate in our last meeting and are still puzzled about what the fuss is all about, a short introduction will be provided.

You may come ‘as you are’, as this is part of the promming tradition, but feel free to wear funny hats, shawls or other colourful equipment, and don’t forget to bring a whistle, a horn and a Union Jack or the flag of your own state or country of residence.

You may also bring your own food and snacks to share. Drinks – both cold and warm – will be available for purchase. Please refrain from bringing your own beverages.

Did you ever happen to come across a strange programme on TV, usually broadcast during the last days of summer, showing large crowds of people, dressed in red and blue, fervently singing and swaying and waving flags in some kind of opera house? Congratulations! You have become a witness of one of the most famous and typically British cultural events: The Last Night Of The Proms! The BBC’s Proms (short for “Promenade Concerts”) are running for eight weeks during the summer, mostly at the Royal Albert Hall in London, and are “The World’s Greatest Classical Music Festival”.

If you would like to know more about this defining part of the British identity, please join us for our Open Meeting at the beginning of July! DBG Dresden board member Janosch Pastewka will give us an inside view of this event, based on his own “promming” experience. His talk will serve as a prelude and preparation for the actual Last Night, which takes place on Saturday, September 10th, 2011, and will be broadcast live at “England, England”, for you all to enjoy and sing along in great company! So come and share your own experience with this and other UK events with friends and like-minded people at our Open Meeting.

Dresden Trust: Opening of Anglo-German Rose Garden

The British Dresden Trust presents a plantation of roses to the City of Dresden as a symbol of reconciliation and friendship. This Anglo-German Rose Garden will be inaugurated on Monday, 16th May, 2011, at 13:00 hrs by Dresden’s First Mayor Dirk Hilbert and the Dresden Trust’s Chairman, Dr. Alan Russell OBE. All Dresdeners and guests are invited to join the ceremony, which will also be attended by a representative of the British Embassy Berlin and a group of British travellers on a cultural journey around German cities organised by the Dresden Trust.

A plaque guides the visitor to the ten different English and German rose varieties growing in the garden and informs about the Dresden Trust’s mission: “This Rose Garden is dedicated to the many Dresdeners of all faiths as well as to the refugees who died in the Firestorm of the 13th and 14th February 1945. The Rose Garden serves as a symbol for reconciliation between the United Kingdom and Germany and expresses our hope for a peaceful co-existence of all peoples.”

The Dresden Trust was founded in 1993 with the aim to support the reconstruction of Dresden’s Frauenkirche with donations from British people. The most important contribution, however, were the Orb and Cross made for the Frauenkirche after the original plans by Alan Smith, a London goldsmith, whose father was one of the bomber pilots involved in the attack on Dresden. As part of its reconciliatory work with Germany, the Dresden Trust also supports student and other exchange projects.
